Half-Moon Flaking

Half-moon flaking, also known as “half-moon scraping” and sometimes “frosting,” is a scraping technique employed in precision machining and machine tool maintenance. It entails creating half-moon-shaped patterns or grooves on the sliding surfaces of machine ways. This method is especially valuable in applications where precise alignment, smooth movements, and enhanced lubrication are paramount.

The benefits of half-moon flaking include improved lubrication due to the creation of small oil reservoirs within the grooves, enhanced precision with flat, parallel, and precisely aligned sliding surfaces, extended tool and component life, and consistent, uniform wear and lubrication characteristics.
