Activity 1 – Golden Mean Calipers
Objective: Explore how precise measurement can contribute to creative designs.
Instructions:
- Have students design intricate geometric patterns or technical drawings using
- specific measurements.
- Encourage precise use of calipers for spacing and lengths.
- Display the completed artwork in class.

Golden Ratio Calipers
Character Design (12:16):
Purpose: Golden ratio calipers are used to measure and create proportions based on the golden ratio. The golden ratio is a proportion of 1 to 1.618, or 0.618 to 1. It is said to be the ideal proportion and can be found in nature, art, and design.
Why: This would be a fun activity for high school students to make their own calipers and then use them to draw something.
Related: Tech 1521, since it involves a type of drawing instrument. I used to use it during my drawing and painting phase.
How: I am not sure about the schedule and time limit—I will know this Friday. I was thinking we would have the materials ready and cut out for them. However, to make the materials, students need to measure, so they can do the measuring themselves. After understanding the process, we will hand them the sticks so they can build the calipers. Based on the YouTube reference, the size shown is too big, so I was wondering if we could adjust the size slightly so they can take the calipers with them.
