IP Ratings

Ingress Protection (IP) ratings are standardized measures used to define the level of protection an assembly provides against the intrusion of solid particles and liquids. The IP rating system is outlined by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and is denoted by a two-digit code, such as IP65 or IP67. The first digit indicates the degree of protection against solids, such as dust or debris, on a scale from 0 to 6, with 6 representing complete dust-tight protection. The second digit specifies the protection against liquids, with values ranging from 0 to 9, where higher numbers indicate stronger resistance to water ingress, including powerful jets and submersion.

Understanding IP ratings is essential for selecting components and assemblies that need to operate reliably in specific environments. For example, outdoor equipment exposed to rain or dust may require an IP65 rating or higher to ensure performance and longevity. Incorporating proper sealing techniques and choosing materials that align with the desired IP rating helps engineers create assemblies that withstand environmental challenges and meet safety and durability standards.
