Bisect a Line (Compass Method)

To bisect a line segment using a compass and a straightedge, follow these steps:

  1. Place the compass at one endpoint of the line segment and set the radius to be more than half the segment’s length.
  2. Draw an arc above and below the line.
  3. Without changing the compass setting, place the compass at the other endpoint and draw two more arcs that intersect the first pair of arcs.
  4. Mark the two intersection points of the arcs.
  5. Draw a straight line through these intersection points using the straightedge. This line is the perpendicular bisector of the segment.
