TECH 1411 Lab Project Development

Project: TECH 1411 Lab Project Development

Fields of Study: Mechanical System Design & Product Realization & Microprocessor Systems

Advisor: Matt Hale

Overview:

Design and develop a device that can be used as an introduction to the mechanical systems design, product realization, and microprocessor systems fields of study. The goal is for students to take multiple labs to design and build this device. A rough outline of the labs is below, although this does not have to be strictly followed. The device should be simple enough to create instructions on how to build it, but complex enough to be interesting. There is flexibility on how complex it must be since the work can be divided amongst multiple students.

Ultimately, this should spark students’ interest in these fields of study so think about what interested you most about your field of study. Was there a lab or topic that you enjoyed most? If so, let’s try to incorporate that into this project.

Potential Project ideas:

  • RC Car
  • Light Fixture
  • Digital Clock

Objectives:

Lab 1: Using NX to design the device or a component of the device

Lab 2: Manufacturing a component of the device

Mold? 3D Printing? Sheet metal? (this will depend on the device)

Lab 3: Arduino setup and programming

Deliverables:

  • The device that will be created as the lab example
  • Lab Instructions
  • The instructions that the students will follow to complete the lab
  • Working drawings for mechanical parts
  • Tooling used during the labs
  • NX CAD files
  • Wiring diagrams and schematics for Arduino lab and any other electrical component
